Good morning, Kent.

Portage County residents are digging out after Winter Storm Fern dropped about a foot of snow, with two warming centers in Ravenna serving those needing shelter today amid forecast temperatures dropping to minus 27 degrees — officials urge community support with donations, volunteers, and needed supplies.

Ohio Gov Mike DeWine urged residents to take caution with freezing weather as cold temperatures in the teens and below zero overnight persist.

Officials recommend staying home if possible and preparing vehicles with winter supplies (ice scraper, blankets) for safety while traveling.

Kent residents can build a winter car emergency kit that works every season to prepare for risks like flat tires, dead batteries and sliding on icy roads.

USA TODAY recommends essentials such as blankets, jump starters + traction aids and expert tips to stay safe when weather turns cold.

Portage County high schools host sports events this week with two games today (Field faces Ravenna in boys bowling and Field meets Mogadore in basketball) and a Crestwood versus Garfield doubleheader (girls tip off at 12:30 p.m. and boys at 3:30 p.m.) at Hiram, with additional contests later this week.
