EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University’s Board approved creating a Digital Engineering Design Center within the College of Aeronautics and Engineering at its March 4 meeting on campus. The center and two new degree programs in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Aviation Science will offer hands-on training starting fall 2026.  Kent State Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kent Parks & Recreation staff recorded two playful otters along the Cuyahoga River, which signals improved water quality after reintroduction efforts. Officials said sightings on cold mornings and at dusk are a welcome sign — a shift from past pollution issues.  Record-Courier
  • Portage County Recycling will open a free reuse center in April at its facility on Mogodore Road, where local residents can pick up donated household hazardous items, including spray paint + cleaning supplies, during Monday and Thursday hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  News 5 Cleveland

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hiram Fire Department resumed service on March 3 after a one-day shutdown caused by a leadership gap, with Lieutenant Louis Danku managing daily operations. The village said it is working to hire a new fire chief as the staff continue to serve the community.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Franklin Township’s Jeff Siefer nearly died from a 'widowmaker' heart attack on March 4 and underwent emergency heart surgery at UH. With timely help from his wife and medics, he recovered well, returned to biking and volunteering at UH Portage, and is now aiming for his next milestone.  Record-Courier

  • Lou Holtz (aged 89) died on March 4 after receiving hospice care, leaving a storied 33-season career marked by a national championship and enduring respect in local football.  Record-Courier
