CULTURE NEWS

  • With daylight saving time (DST) beginning on March 8, Ohio Muslims observing Ramadan will see fasting hours extend from roughly 12 to nearly 13 hours. This scheduling change marks the final overlap of DST with Ramadan until 2057.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young learners from Kent State's Child Development Center visited the university's chemistry labs on Thursday, Mar. 5 where they experienced demonstrations like dry ice bubbles, galaxy in a bottle, and elephant toothpaste designed to spark curiosity and foster a lifelong love of science.  Kent State Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Rockets girls' basketball team lost 50-40 to West Branch last Saturday at Lordstown High School in a tough game that ended their bid for a third consecutive district title.  Weekly Villager
  • The Berkshire Badgers earned third place at a sectional tournament in Burton last Saturday with a team score of 148 points and secured one sectional champion as well as several district qualifiers, and they are set to compete today at the Independence District tournament at the Independence Field House.  Weekly Villager
  • The Crestwood wrestling team won the Division III Rootstown sectional title last Saturday at Rootstown High School by scoring 180 points, which crowned four sectional champions and qualified eight wrestlers for the district tournament (today at 5 p.m. at the Independence Field House).  Weekly Villager
  • Doug Velasquez has been named Cardinal High School's new head football coach and dean of students. He will join at the end of the school year to rebuild a football program (with a 1-19 record in two years) and improve attendance and discipline using his 20 years of experience.  Weekly Villager
