Good morning, Kent. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 20th of March.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University officials announced changes to academic programs plus administrative cuts as part of Transformation 2028. The university will eliminate several majors and around 30 leadership positions, add three new majors, and restructure its colleges with many changes taking effect in fall 2025.  Record-Courier
  • Maplewood Career Center seniors in the Electrical and HVAC programs have renovated the Windham Renaissance Family Center over the last several weeks by replacing lights, fixing boilers, cleaning burners, oiling motors and changing filters. They will finish remaining work after spring break — installing a motor and replacing extra lights — as part of their work-based learning experience and contribution to the community.  Weekly Villager

HEALTH NEWS

  • Measles cases have risen in the U.S. with over 300 confirmed since 2019 in nearby states, though Ohio has not reported any cases yet. Local health officials urge residents to check their vaccine records or consult their doctor if records are missing—experts note that two doses help protect against serious complications.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Garfield G-Men’s softball team is mostly made up of underclassmen and will open its season this Saturday at 11 a.m. in a road game against rival Windham—Coach Tina Faulhaber said the deep roster and fresh energy should help the team rise in the conference.  Weekly Villager
  • Local basketball players from Rootstown, Mogadore and Streetsboro played Monday in the WTCBCA all star games as they adjusted quickly after their state title run, and four local standouts — Naomi Benson, Nadia Lough, Amelia Morris and Delilah Rahe — will join the Summit County team when they face Stark on March 27.  Record-Courier
  • After losing 65-46 to Columbus Grove last Saturday in the Division VI state title game in Dayton, the Rootstown girls basketball team said playing there fulfilled a long-held dream.
