CRIME NEWS

  • Joshua Fortson, a 37-year-old man from Akron, was sentenced to 29 years in prison on Thursday after a federal jury convicted him of trafficking methamphetamine and unlawfully possessing a firearm, and he operated his drug business in Summit and Portage counties using a driver to transport drugs from Georgia.  Record-Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wilderness Center celebrated National Native Plant Month by opening its Native Plant Sale on March 24. It will host a Speaker Series on April 5 at 1pm, April 12 at 1pm, April 15 at 6pm and April 22 at 6pm to show how native plants help local wildlife—giving gardeners practical ideas for their outdoor spaces.  Weekly Villager

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 1 Friday afternoon—banning DEI offices and scholarships at public colleges and putting state funding at risk for noncompliance—and the law will take effect in 90 days.  FOX8
  • Kenneth J. David, a Vietnam War veteran from the 101st Airborne, risked his life on May 7th, 1970 to protect wounded comrades while injured himself — on Jan. 3rd he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and his name was added to the Cleveland VA’s Wall of Valor as he continues to support fellow veterans in Trumbull County.  FOX8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spectrum customers faced confusion during the Cleveland Guardians Opening Day game as only legacy customers could watch on select packages while most needed Spectrum TV Select Plus — offered at $125 per month with bundle discounts — to view the game. The Guardians won 7-4 in 10 innings and will return to action today at 4:10 p.m. on channels 306 and 1306 against the Royals.  Record-Courier
  • Kent State men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff confirmed he will remain with the team after a season that ended with a 24-12 record and a NIT quarterfinal run. He finished 14 seasons with 288 wins — including nine seasons with 20 wins or more — and helped key seniors reach school records.  Kent State Today
  • Mount Union University men's basketball coach Mike Fuline became the winningest coach on January 4 when his team defeated Otterbein University—recording a season record of 262 to 114 in 14 seasons. A former Ravenna boys’ assistant, he earned three OAC tournament championships and four regular season titles—demonstrating his fast rise in Northeast Ohio basketball.  Weekly Villager
