ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lyrids meteor shower peaked Tuesday, April 21, offering 10 to 20 meteors for stargazers in Kent. Those who missed the peak can still watch a few meteors tonight if they find a dark spot away from city lights & check the weather.  Record-Courier
  • Bobcats were spotted in Cuyahoga Valley National Park and nearby metroparks on Tuesday, Apr. 21. Park officials advised visitors not to share sighting locations on social media to protect the animals.  Record-Courier
  • Today, Earth Day is celebrated as Kent residents join in planting trees & picking up plastic to honor our planet. First held in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, the event reminds us to care for the Earth and protect our shared home.  Record-Courier
  • Morel mushroom season is underway and local foragers are reminded to stay on state park trails when gathering mushrooms near water and dead ash trees (per ODNR guidelines) to avoid poisonous false morels. Areas tagged for mushroom hunting offer safety and scenic trails for Kent residents.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials report 11 confirmed measles cases in Ohio this year as lower vaccination rates spark concern among parents; meanwhile, Utah has reported over 600 cases from an outbreak that began in 2025, and officials urge residents to update immunizations.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Field softball sophomore Allison Barto said the Falcons are energized after a walk-off win against Aurora. She explained the victory could boost the team's performance as they prepare for upcoming games today.  Record-Courier
  • Former Portland forward Cameron Williams has committed to Kent State men's basketball for the 2026-27 season plus he entered the transfer portal before it closed on April 21. He scored 20 points in a December game against the Flashes.  Record-Courier
  • Portage County high school sports recaps cover results from April 20-26 in baseball, softball, track, lacrosse, and flag football. Southeast won an extra-inning softball game while Rootstown and Field delivered strong performances in baseball and other sports throughout the week.  Record-Courier
