CRIME NEWS

  • Portage County deputies charged Akron men Shmar M. Antoine, 32, and Akili C. Antoine after a traffic stop near State Route 44 in Rootstown led to the discovery of about 100 ecstasy pills, 3.75 ounces of methamphetamine, a loaded Glock handgun + evidence of identity fraud, with Shmar held on a $150,000 bond and Akili on a $100,000 bond for multiple felony charges.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University will hold remembrance events from May 2 through May 4 to mark the 55th anniversary of the May 4 shootings—where four students died and nine were injured—with free lectures, panel discussions, film screenings and a Candlelight Vigil scheduled at the campus.  Record-Courier
  • FOX 8 meteorologist Alexis Walters has launched a summer segment called ‘Weather Class at Summer Camp’ to teach kids about weather science at camps across Northeast Ohio — she may also ask campers to help with the forecast if camp directors request her visit. Her program will bring hands-on weather lessons to summer camps starting soon.  FOX8
  • Kent State University announced that seven graduates and three current students had their international student visas reinstated after the Justice Department reversed prior revocations on April 25— allowing them to continue optional practical training in the U.S.  FOX8

  • S Martinelli & Company voluntarily recalled 7,234 cases of apple juice containing over 170,000 bottles sold in 28 states, including Ohio and Kentucky, due to concerns that patulin — a toxic substance produced by molds — may cause temporary health problems.  Record-Courier
