- ➤ Temporary food pantries will start in Portage County in May, with the first running Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Portage County Health District on 999 E. - ➤ Kent firefighters rescued a woman who fell into the Cuyahoga River early Tuesday after she slipped while dipping her feet in the water and reached an island—where the Portage County Dive Team joined the effort—south of West Main Street around 3:30 a.m. News 5 Cleveland

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ PBS Western Reserve said a government rescission package plans to cut the federal funds that make up 22% of its budget—threatening programs like preschool education and emergency alerts. Congress may vote on the cuts as early as May 5 and local supporters are urged to call their legislators—helping to keep public media free. Record-Courier
- ➤ Ohio's SSI recipients will receive two checks in May 2025 – one on May 1 for May and one on May 30 for June since the June payment is moved early because June 1 falls on a weekend. Record-Courier
- ➤ The Portage County Engineers Office will resurface more than 10 miles of county roads in Franklin, Ravenna, Shalersville, Mantua, Nelson and Windham townships later in 2025.
