COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank will launch pop-up food pantries in Portage County this month with events on May 7 in Ravenna, May 18 in Rootstown, and May 20 in Kent at Kent State University's Dix Stadium. Pantries offer walk-thru service from May to October and drive-thru from November through April.  Record-Courier
  • The annual candlelight walk and vigil, which has united the community since 1971 to honor May 4, 1970, took place Sunday evening at Kent State Commons. The walk began at 11 p.m. — its route was changed due to construction on Main Street and ended at the Prentice Hall parking lot.  Kent State Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers can get free meals and discounts during National Teacher Appreciation Week from May 4 to 8 — local and chain restaurants require a valid school ID to honor educators statewide.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • The OHSAA softball tournament draw was released with Field earning the top local seed as a sixth seed in Division IV Northeast and Aurora placed seventh in Division III; eight of 12 local teams earned top-15 seeds and tournament games will run from May 11 through May 21.  Record-Courier
