The May 4 Task Force— a student group remembering the tragic protest that killed four students and injured nine— marked its 50th anniversary with an event held on May 2 at Bowman Hall where local and Emerson College students shared insights on free speech and remembrance.

Chair Sophie Swengel said the program honored the legacy of that day and reinforced the lessons learned from the past.

During the May 4th commemoration, Kent State University President Todd Diacon stressed the university’s core values of kindness, respect— and dignity while noting his personal struggles amid today's uncertainty and connecting his remarks to the school’s tragic past.

He said his address honored those affected by previous violence and urged the Kent community to learn from history.

Spotted lanternflies have been found in Ohio and harm plants by feeding and leaving a sticky substance that attracts pests—officials advise local residents to scrape egg masses into soapy water or alcohol to destroy them.

The invasive insect arrived in 2020 from Asia and now threatens crops and natural areas—efforts are ongoing to control its spread.

Ravenna, Kent and Streetsboro settled a civil lawsuit with Portage County and Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski over funds from the defunct drug task force, with each city receiving $51,911.81 ($35,245.14 from the sheriff and $16,666.67 from the county).

The agreement was signed by the parties and dismissed with prejudice to permanently end the case.

Former Kent State quarterback and Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was voted into the Patriots Hall of Fame as the 37th inductee on May 5th – he will join former head coach Bill Parcelles while details for the induction ceremony are announced soon.
