  • Stow's Acme Fresh Market closed May 5; its pharmacy will remain open through May 19. Mayor John Pribonic, who worked at the store for 42 years (starting as a stockboy), said he values its family spirit and expects new plans to fill the space.  Record-Courier

  • The Shalersville Historical Society will host its first annual Classic Car Show on May 30 at 4 p.m. on the campus green at 9154 State Route 44 in Mantua, featuring live music, food, and tours, with funds benefiting the society (backup date May 31 if inclement weather occurs).  Weekly Villager

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA has shared fuel-saving tips after gas prices in Northeast Ohio rose nearly 98 cents to $4.91 per gallon; motorists should drive within the speed limit, keep tires inflated, and avoid prolonged idling + combine trips to save fuel.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Julia Michalak, born with cerebral palsy (and once dreading gym class), now enjoys teaching PE at Woodridge Elementary on April 28.  Record-Courier
  • Ohio State and Kent State students lost access to Canvas after a cybersecurity incident disrupted the system on May 7, and the hacker group (ShinyHunters) is demanding a ransom while universities assess the situation.  Record-Courier
  • Jared Brown received Kent State University’s Distinguished Advising Award on Wednesday, May 6 for his dedicated support in guiding students through challenging degree paths in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering. His work eased academic stress by providing actionable solutions that students nominated him for.  Kent State Today
  • Kent State University suspended its pilot use of the Flock Safety license plate recognition cameras on campus after feedback showed some community members felt less safe.   • The Mental Health & Recovery Board in Portage County is distributing 3,000 coffee sleeves and 4,000 coasters with 988 Crisis Lifeline information at coffee shops + bars and veterans' organizations to boost mental health support during Mental Health Month in rural areas.  Weekly Villager
