EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Garfield School District held a grand opening for its new track at Harry Kraft Middle School in Garrettsville last Saturday, giving the Garfield G-Men a home track for the first time in over 20 years. During the ceremony, which included a Walk of Honor and a ribbon-cutting by Coach John Bennett, Athletic Director Jim Pfleger said the new facility—resurfaced with rubberized adhesive—will support future meets and community events.  Weekly Villager

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage County Job and Family Services is watching House Bill 96 that would require non-elderly SNAP recipients to report their status monthly—changing the current six-month recertification process. The new mandate could add extra work for the county and impact about 6,250 SNAP households if it is passed.  Weekly Villager
  • Portage County Water Rescue Team will train at 11 a.m. May 18 at Craig Beach (on the east side of Lake Milton near the state park marina and amphitheater off Grandview Road) and Lake Milton and Jackson Township fire departments will join the exercise; the public is invited to watch but must stay behind marked safety tape.  Record-Courier
