- ➤ Kent's Muslim community will observe Dhul Hijjah, a sacred period with a focus on Yawm al-Arafah on May 26 and Eid al-Adha starting the evening. Local groups plan community prayers, fasting and gatherings to mark the holy events (with fasting observed by those unable to attend Hajj). Record-Courier
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Portage Park District has renewed its Community Parks and Trails Grant program to help towns build parks and trails with $100,000 from its 2026 levy (applications are accepted until Oct. 1). Record-Courier
- ➤ Pavement repairs and chip-sealing will begin May 26 on Routes 303 (from SR 44 to SR 700) and 305 (from east of SR 82 to SR 88) in Portage County. The Ohio Department of Transportation says work will finish by late August. Record-Courier
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A water boil alert was issued in Mantua Village on May 19 after a water line break near 10676 Main Street reduced water pressure. Residents were advised to boil or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene until tests confirm the water is safe. Record-Courier
- ➤ In Kent and across Ohio, three common ticks (blacklegged, lone star, and American dog tick) can spread diseases, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Health officials urge residents to use repellents and check for ticks as rising temperatures increase tick activity. Record-Courier

- ➤ Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is hosting a barber contest for Northeast Ohio barbers to win his personal barber spot; entries must be submitted by today + the competition takes place on May 24. Record-Courier
- ➤ Aurora track and field swept the Suburban American team titles on May 19 while Garfield won its eighth MVAC Gray league title, with standout performances by Isabella Cicero and Olivia Kuchenbecker (both winning all their events) at local meets. Record-Courier
