EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maplewood Career Center has sent three students (Nolan Hamilton, Madalynn Lane, and Carter Desatnik) to compete at the SkillsUSA National Competition (June 1-5 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta) in industrial motor control, medical assisting, and automotive service. They aim to connect with potential employers and build their career opportunities.  Weekly Villager

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new Portage Crisis Center will open this fall at 3922 Lovers Lane in Ravenna to give a safe place for people in mental health crisis. It is designed to lower emergency department visits (with 12 crisis care spots and 14 stabilization beds), officials said.  Record-Courier
  • A nationwide recall for powdered milk linked to salmonella expanded on May 28, affecting products like pizzas, croutons and seasonings sold at retailers such as Walmart, Aldi and Target (local shoppers may also be impacted). Consumers should not use recalled items and must return them for a refund or replacement.  Record-Courier

  • The Field Falcons earned their first regional finalist spot after beating Lakeview 2-1 in extra innings at Devine Diamond on May 27 — the win capped a historic season as the team prepares for its next championship game.  Record-Courier
