ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Portage County Water Rescue Team warns boaters to avoid the Cuyahoga River after a 5-year-old boy drowned near the Sheraton Suites on Front Street and rescue teams in Kent saved two people during river incidents while a man remains missing (the team posted its warning on June 22).  Record-Courier
  • The Kent Fire Department rescued 23 people and six dogs from the fast-moving Cuyahoga River near the Middlebury Road boat ramp on June 22 after 11 people fell from their rafts—multiple departments worked together over three hours—and officials warned residents against entering the river following a fatal incident in Cuyahoga Falls on June 21.  Record-Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage County Park District asked Ravenna at a June 9 meeting to help save Crystal Lake by turning its land into a public park while keeping the city's water rights safe—officials said the lake is key for future water needs. The park district will follow up with city leaders and apply for a grant by Oct. 1.  Record-Courier
