EDUCATION NEWS

  • During a June 25 board meeting, Kent State University trustees approved unchanged spending of nearly $703.6 million for the coming fiscal year and set tuition rates for new undergraduates—final rates will be set once the state budget is finalized. University President Todd Diacon will submit an operating budget in September—legislative changes to Pell Grants and state funding may affect enrollment.  Record-Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage County Job and Family Services announced the 2025 Back-to-School Clothing Voucher Program to provide $150 vouchers for school clothing and shoes to eligible kindergarten through grade 12 children in SNAP or TANF households. The application period runs from June 23 to August 8 and vouchers must be used at the chosen store before September 30 (applications are available at the Ravenna OhioMeansJobs Center or online).  Weekly Villager

SPORTS NEWS

  • Matt Hill, a lifelong Garfield resident with six years of coaching experience, was named head coach on June 12 after Board of Education approval and replaces Andy Olesky who resigned on May 7. Hill is the son of a local coaching legend & he brings deep community ties & passion to lead the team this season.  Weekly Villager
