  • Portage County Sheriff's Office has issued an active missing person alert for Darrell Wayt (69) after he was last seen in Rootstown on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. driving a white Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (FRA2022) and reportedly left his prescription medications behind while his cell phone is off.  Record-Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cincinnati-based artist Robert Kroeger returns with his new book Stone Barns of America and will hold an event in Shalersville on September 19th from 6—7:30 p.m. to display barn paintings and share historic stories that benefit the Shalersville Historical Society.  Weekly Villager

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kyle Martini, a 2025 Hiram graduate who played on the 2024 championship team, was named the new head coach of men's volleyball on August 8—he will lead the same players he once competed with to stabilize the program after repeated coaching changes.   • Kent State University will host its Aeronautics and Engineering Expo on Sept. 6 at its airport from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the event will feature a historic Goodyear Blimp, aircraft displays, flight rides, hands-on STEM exhibits and a charity booth for local animal shelters.  Kent State Today

  • Today, Portage County high school football opens with Akron Garfield at Southeast, where Southeast is predicted to win 24-21—key players like Zilyahn Blair are expected to shine in a matchup that sets the tone for the season. On Friday and later, teams from Roosevelt, Mogadore, Copley, Brecksville, Garfield, Strasburg, Waterloo, Field and Toledo Christian will face off with scores predicted to be close—each game highlighting returning stars and new starters.  Record-Courier
