  • Nearly 30 individuals and groups have been nominated for the 11th Celebrate Portage awards—set for 5 p.m. Sept.25 at the Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center.   • Viega Manufacturing opened its new facility last Thursday at the Turnpike Commerce Center—4400 Beck Road in Mantua, and it produces plumbing and HVAC solutions.   • AccuWeather forecasts that Ohio’s fall colors will peak by mid-October while Old Farmer’s Almanac says leaves will begin to change in late September. After a spring and summer with normal rains and a drier August, residents can expect brilliant reds, oranges, and golds — a sign of a vibrant fall if typical weather returns.  Record-Courier

  • Kent State alumnus D. Mark Jones worked in New York after 9/11 to help groups get funds for lost equipment and now leads the Ohio Geological Survey where his team studies the state’s rock and water data. He earned his master’s at Kent State and uses new tools — like a multispectrum core scanner — to improve how Ohio’s rocks are studied.  Kent State Today

  • Field boys soccer senior Cedric Martin redeemed himself with a game-winning goal at Roosevelt—his effort came after a tough play earlier in the match.  Record-Courier
