  • Paul Tazewell — the first Black Oscar-winning costume designer from Akron — spoke at Kent State University on Sept. 18th about his work on Wicked and his passion for mentoring students, with about 650 community members in attendance.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Countywide reading program Reflecting on Humans’ Place in the World will launch Sept. 22 at Hiram College with over 15 free events held at the college campus, local libraries, and a retirement community. Six high schools will join by reading John Green’s The Anthropocene Reviewed — with free copies available at many events — to help bring the county together around the program.  Record-Courier

  • Kent City Council unanimously approved a 36.5 acre donation from Stream and Wetlands Foundation to expand Jessie Smith Nature Preserve—three adjacent parcels south of Fairchild Avenue and west of Majors Lane near Fish Creek will add more hiking and trail access for residents.  Record-Courier
