COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage County Water Rescue Team is selling Halloween T-shirts to raise funds for two families impacted by cancer as it mourns Bob Abbuhl, a volunteer who died Sept 24 after battling pancreatic cancer. The fundraiser also supports a child aged 11 who has started treatment for Burkitt’s Leukemia and needs hospital care for a month—proceeds will aid both families with orders accepted until Oct 17.  Record-Courier

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SITE Centers Corp sold the Stow Community Center on Kent Road to Haverford Retail Partners—headquartered in Pennsylvania—for a $126 million deal that includes properties in East Hanover and Easton, and the sale is set to close in the fourth quarter.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State’s Read Center got a $50,000 grant to train teachers in southwestern Nigeria—Amanda Johnson led workshops with local officials in Ogun State to share proven teaching methods. The center will bring more faculty for additional training in early 2026—expanding its global education ties.  Kent State Today

FINANCE NEWS

  • AT&T agreed to a $177 million settlement over two data breaches in 2024—Ohio customers affected can file claims for up to $7,500 and must submit their claim by November 18. Eligible customers may file online or by mail to receive their payment.  Record-Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio residents must register to vote or verify their registration status by 9 p.m. on Oct 6—this can be done online, in person at public offices, or by mail. Early in-person voting will start on Oct 7 and absentee ballots will be accepted until Nov 4.  Record-Courier
  • Kent Police Explorers Program is hosting its annual info night from 7 to 9 p.m. on October 7th at the Kent Police Department at 301 S. Depeyster St.—attendees aged 14 to 20 will meet advisers and learn about criminal justice careers.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Townhall II Integrated Health Network is booking appointments at its new Medicine-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Clinic at 512 N. Chestnut St. in Ravenna for opioid use disorder and alcoholism; the clinic offers daily, weekly and monthly treatment options combining medications + counseling for recovery.  Weekly Villager
  • SkyLane Bowling Alley in Garrettsville will host a scotch doubles fundraiser on Oct 4 at 6:30 p.m.—all proceeds will go to support Garfield student Wade Johnston as he begins chemo and radiation for cancer.  Weekly Villager
