EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kent State alumna Roe Green gave a $1 million gift to start a new support fund for the School of Theatre and Dance and Porthouse Theatre that will offer $100,000 a year for 10 years to pay for productions, hiring staff, hosting master classes and giving merit-based scholarships—students who earn these scholarships will be called Roe Green Scholars. - ➤ Kent State University earned an AASHE STARS Silver rating for campus sustainability after moving up from a bronze rating by updating its energy systems and recycling programs. The Office of Sustainability introduced a food waste system—turning scraps into renewable energy—to lower waste on campus. Kent State Today
- ➤ Kent City Schools Board will have at least one new member next year as four candidates are running for three seats in the November 4 election—two incumbents, Colin P. Boyle and David Myers, and challengers, John Avouris and P.J. Errera, with Tiera Moore not seeking re-election. Record-Courier
- ➤ The Crestwood Scarlet Guard Marching Band kicked off its 2025 fall season with top honors on September 13—winning 1st place in Class A and Best Percussion and becoming Class A Regional Champions at the Bands of America Regional Championships in Toledo. The band will perform at Ohio State University on October 11 at 3 p.m., then travel to Brunswick on October 18 before returning for the OMEA State Marching Band Finals on October 25. Weekly Villager
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former Kent police officer Max Arnett died in August while serving as a volunteer squad leader in Ukraine—he was 25 and had a strong record of duty. - ➤ Lane restrictions will begin on New Milford and Hattrick roads under I-76 in Rootstown on October 13 due to bridge repairs and will last about two months until mid-December. Record-Courier
- ➤ Portage native Riley Coontz, a Southeast High School graduate, serves in the US Navy as a fire controlman on the USS Cole and leads junior sailors with pride—he will help guide the ship as it marks 25 years since a deadly terrorist attack on October 12. Record-Courier

- ➤ At Dix Stadium today, the Streetsboro boys secured a 1-0 win over Field with a 20th-minute goal by Ethan Laryea — the girls team will face Cloverleaf in the championship for the third straight title match. Record-Courier
