- ➤ Portage County District Library is teaming up with local businesses in October to give discounts to anyone who shows a library card. The event will offer special deals at a bakery, a cafe, a cinema, a restaurant, and a flower shop — helping local shoppers save money while supporting the community. Weekly Villager
- ➤ The NGCC fundraiser on Saturday evening engaged local residents with an interactive murder mystery titled Murder at the Slurp and Burp Oktoberfest that featured local actors and a hearty Oktoberfest dinner to support winter food access for families. Community participants donated over 50 Chinese auction baskets and one raffle winner received more than $250 — showing strong local support. Weekly Villager
- ➤ Neighbors in Mantua Township are opposing a proposed bike trail extension that would take up to 18 feet from their front yards along Pioneer Trail—about 25 yard signs have been posted in the area to express their concerns about tree removal and loss of privacy. Portage Parks is reviewing its feasibility study while planning the extension that will connect local trails, with construction on the contested phase expected to start in 2029. News 5 Cleveland

- ➤ Today, the Diocese of Youngstown closed the original St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown after the parish requested the change due to water damage and safety concerns. The newer building remains in use for worship as part of Saint John Neumann Parish following the merger with St. Joseph Parish in early 2024. Record-Courier

- ➤ Superintendent Aireane Curtis thanked the Hiram Community Trust for a $6,000 grant that allowed Crestwood Primary School to purchase an Inchy Book Worm vending machine—students earn coins for good behavior to select books—and noted additional donations of $900 in Office Max gift cards and $400 for book funds. Crestwood’s Scarlet Guard Marching Band won Class A Champion honors in Mantua in September and will perform at Ohio Stadium on October 11th, at an OMEA competition on October 18th, and at the State Marching Band Finals on October 25th while the next board meeting is set for Tuesday, October 14th at 7 p.m. at the Central Office. - ➤ Portage Substance Abuse and Mental Health Conference will be held on October 30 from 8:00am to 4pm at the NEW Center Ballroom at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown—hosted by the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County. National experts including Dr. Nicole Labor, Mark Saunders, Dr. Madeleine Tosanovic, and Amanda Kantaras will discuss addiction, trauma, harm reduction, and self-care while continuing education credits are offered and Crisis Intervention Team awards are presented. - ➤ High school girls tennis players from the Akron, Canton — and Kent area are competing at Springside Athletic Club in Akron with Division I matches held on Oct 9 and Division II matches beginning today at 9 a.m.; the top singles and doubles players will advance to the state tournament in Mason starting Oct 16. - ➤ Yesterday, the Savannah Bananas announced their 2026 schedule at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and via a live stream with a ticket lottery opening at 8:30 p.m. ET and running until Oct. 31. The team featured Ohio natives Gage Voorhees & KJ Jackson after a sold-out summer tour that played at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park and held events at Canal Park, Huntington Park and Progressive Field.
