COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John Kennedy will finish his 6th annual Hunger Run today in Kent—he has run over 100 miles across Portage County to raise funds to fight hunger and poverty. After the run, Kennedy will become executive director of the Community Action Council on Oct. 22.  Record-Courier
  • A 'No Kings' protest is happening today in Ravenna at the Courthouse Lawn from 4 to 6 p.m.—participants are asked to bring music makers and signs. A second rally is set for downtown Kent at the gazebo from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct 18—organizers urge early registration.  Record-Courier

  • Bent Tree Coffee Roasters in Kent unveiled its new overhead crane today — warehouse manager Corrina Hamilton demonstrated how the equipment lifts heavy loads.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Garfield High School hosted the 58th induction ceremony of the National Honor Society where 24 new inductees were honored for scholarship, leadership, service and character. The new members lit candles from current members and received certificates and a yellow rose — a symbol of passing on knowledge and responsibility.  Weekly Villager

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ohio is expected to see its first measurable snowfall within the next three weeks, with Cleveland usually receiving snow on November 10, Columbus on November 20, Dayton on November 24, and Cincinnati on November 29. Warmer Lake Erie conditions may trigger lake-effect snow in northern Ohio while frost advisories and La Niña point to a colder winter ahead.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • UH Portage Medical Center will host the Monster Dash Fun Run and 5K tomorrow at 6847 North Chestnut Street to donate 50% of the proceeds to Raven Packs Foundation, which makes food bags for needy elementary students in Ravenna. The event starts with a 400-meter fun run for kids at 8:30 a.m. (an optional 5K race begins at 9 a.m.) and will promote healthy lifestyles (with a fun costume option for all participants).  Weekly Villager

  • Portage County high school football games are set for today, with predictions showing Aurora beating Roosevelt, Rootstown beating Chagrin Falls, Kirtland beating Crestwood, Streetsboro defeating Field, Ravenna topping Coventry, Garfield edging Crestview, LaBrae besting Southeast, Lowellville outpacing Waterloo, Mogadore winning over St. Thomas Aquinas and Windham overcoming Richmond Heights—strong defenses and key players will shape the playoff hopes.
