- ➤ Kent State student government president Ivory Kendrick led a data-driven negotiation that lowered the cold weather policy threshold from -20 to -15 degrees wind chill; the new policy went into effect after university officials and students supported the change — aiming to protect students during prolonged exposure to extreme cold. - ➤ Government officials said reserve funds will let nearly 1.5 million Ohioans receive SNAP benefits on Nov. 1 despite a potential shutdown (62% of households include children and 43% include older or disabled members), while USDA data show the average benefit increased to $186 per person to help low-income families. - ➤ Portage County Job and Family Services met with local agencies on Oct 27 to arrange extra food and support as SNAP benefits are set to end on Nov 1 because of a federal shutdown.
