BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hiram House Salon will mark its 17th anniversary with a Christmas Open House on Wednesday, November 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at its location on Garfield Road in Hiram—offering appetizers, prizes and product discounts to celebrate this family-run business milestone.  Weekly Villager
  • Mr. Fun’s is closing its storefront at 2104 Front St. in Cuyahoga Falls on Dec. 31 and will shift to online costume rentals and sales—after more than 60 years in business, it will hold a closing sale through the Christmas season and keep renting costumes for school and theater projects.  Record-Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Freedom Township Historical Society is getting ready for its November 11 meeting with a display honoring Freedom veterans and asks anyone to send in a short biography and photo by November 7 — the details will be kept in a special notebook and Bicentennial calendars will be available at the event.  Weekly Villager
  • Richele Charlton started the Kent Ghost Walk 18 years ago after a committee wondered if ghosts were in Kent—using local tales to shape the tour—and it now shows sites like the Franklin Hotel and the Masonic Center where spooky legends persist. The tour collects ghost stories from archives and public calls to share Kent’s eerie history dating back to the early 1800s.  Kent State Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Portage County Senior Board has chosen 12 student leaders from across the county to serve as new board members for the 2025-26 school year—these students will meet monthly to pick the Seniors of the Month. This change will give each school a strong voice in highlighting top academic and community achievements.  Weekly Villager
  • Four students (Merilee, Bailey, Brittany and Julia) were named as drum majors for the Kent State Marching Band for 2025 after a competitive audition process in early spring. They will lead the band at sports and homecoming events under director Darin Olson.  Kent State Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Homeowners in Mantua Township have objected to a plan for the Headwaters Trail along Pioneer Trail Road and Mantua Center Road, which led township trustees to reverse their earlier support. Portage Park District will hire engineers to study alternative routes and address concerns before the end of 2025 (Plan B originally proposed using the public road right-of-way).  Weekly Villager

SPORTS NEWS

  • Garfield freshman Lina Kaufman clinched a state berth for the OHSAA Division III regional meet at Boardman last Saturday by finishing 11th with a time of 19:44.01 + she broke a school record from 1986 and will compete today at Fortress Obetz at 11:50 a.m. in the season's final cross country race.  Weekly Villager
  • Southeast sophomore Caden Dillon qualified for state after a 25th-place finish at the Boardman regional meet and said his strong drive to compete comes from his family tradition in sports - his focus on winning continues as he prepares for future meets. Local runners Nathan Eminian and Carter Stevenson also improved their times, underlining a strong showing at the regional events.  Record-Courier
  • Aurora girls cross country team featuring six freshmen and one senior finished third in the Division II Boardman regional race—advancing the team to the state meet. Coach Laura Bell said the young runners showed strong mental toughness, with twins Claire and Evelyn Jenkins placing in the top 10.  Record-Courier
