  • Kent Fire Department will hold a push-in ceremony on November 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Station 2, 418 N. Mantua St.—community members will help push the new fire engine into the bay following a tradition from when fire vehicles were drawn by horses.  Record-Courier
  • Portage Foundation reactivated its Rapid Response Fund to provide urgent grants to local nonprofits+ public agencies so families can get food and essential services as SNAP benefits may pause amid a potential federal shutdown. Local providers are preparing for a surge in need with many Ohioans relying on the program.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University students can choose from a range of spring electives, from weather studies to digital machine knitting, and are urged to use advising services early to align their schedule with their goals+advisors encourage sharing personal interests for the best course match.  Kent State Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Veterans Day is a federal holiday on Nov. 11 that will close federal offices, state services, banks, and post offices; ATMs, digital banking, and major delivery services continue on schedule—local trash pickup and school hours may vary.  Record-Courier
  • Portage County's Job and Family Services is working with partners to help residents get food after SNAP benefits were paused on Nov.1 due to a federal shutdown. The agency will provide extra help today with a drive-thru food pantry in Ravenna and a pop-up event in Garrettsville—local organizations also offer additional support.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream announced a voluntary recall of Haagen-Dazs chocolate dark chocolate mini bars sold at Kroger and Giant Eagle after it was found they may contain undeclared wheat that can cause allergic reactions. People with wheat allergies are urged to return or discard the recalled 6-count product (batch code LLA519501 with Best By January 31) for a refund.  Record-Courier
