COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank will host pop-up food pantries in Portage County this November; a new pantry will run at Garrettsville Public Library from 9 to 11 a.m. today while drive-thru pantries will operate at Kent State University’s Dix Stadium on Nov. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. and at Northeast Ohio Medical University on Nov. 24 from noon to 2 p.m. (the Garrettsville pantry is new) (drive-thru services run year round).  Record-Courier
  • Haymaker Farmers' Market in Kent gave over $100k in food benefits last year & now asks for donations as SNAP benefits face disruption. The market runs programs that match SNAP benefits, offer WIC produce, and include produce prescriptions to help local families and farmers.  Record-Courier
  • Gloria's Welcoming Hands in Ravenna will host its holiday food distribution on Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Allen Chapel (150 Oakwood St.), where Portage County residents will receive turkeys and hams on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Record-Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State's College of Architecture and Environmental Design held its Fall 2025 Construction Management Career Fair in early October in the Kent Student Center ballroom—more than 70 companies met with students to discuss career opportunities and network for future jobs.  Kent State Today
  • Kent State announced 51 winners of its 10th annual Summer Undergraduate Research Experience on Oct. 25 in the Kiva auditorium as students from fields like psychology and computer science presented their work under faculty guidance — the university also received the prestigious R1 designation for top research activity.  Kent State Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage County received about $2.3 million from opioid settlement funds and used $500,000 to keep its probation department programs running—while $350,000 over 10 years will support a new homeless shelter for those facing mental health and substance abuse issues.  News 5 Cleveland
  • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine sent $7 million to eight food banks—helping offset delays in federal SNAP benefits—and will provide emergency aid through Ohio Works First to 63,000 low-income families today as the government shutdown disrupts food assistance.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Portage County high school football matchups include a game today between Streetsboro and Lake Catholic and contests with St. Clairsville facing Garfield and East Palestine taking on Mogadore. Experts predict a 35-21 win for Lake Catholic, a 35-28 win for Garfield, and a 35-21 win for Mogadore — forecasts based on recent team performances.  Record-Courier
  • Garfield freshman Lina Kaufman and Southeast senior Julia Wheeler earned All-Ohio honors at Fortress Obetz after finishing 20th and 22nd in the Division III girls race. Wheeler reached her third state podium finish while Kaufman celebrated her debut—both runners showed grit in a highly competitive event.  Record-Courier
