ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 2 a.m. on Pymatuning Reservoir in Pymatuning State Park, Cadet 1st Lt. Jacob Brass used his Air Force ROTC training to save four people after a boat capsized — towing them to an island and treating one man for hypothermia — until the fire department arrived.  Kent State Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University hosted seven-time Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria as part of its 2025-26 Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series where he led master classes, rehearsals and lectures on music, business and social change. He challenged students to expand their skills and shared his passion for Latin rhythms—linking history and art—while encouraging creative growth.  Kent State Today
  • Sarah Seaman, a Hiram College sport management student from Garrettsville, volunteered at the Ryder Cup where she and fellow students used hand signals to update live coverage and manage crowd control—gaining a rare behind the scenes look at how a major golf event is run.  Weekly Villager

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ceremonies to honor Portage County veterans are scheduled in Kent and Ravenna this week. The Portage County Board of Commissioners will host its ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Ravenna on November 11 and Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority will hold a service at 1 p.m. near the Gateway Transit Center in Kent (Kent State University also has a November 10 event on campus).  Record-Courier
  • Kent Fire Department held a push-in ceremony for a new engine yesterday at Station 2 in Kent. Fire Chief Jamie Samels led the event that included a blessing from chaplain Fr. Will Wainio (St. Patrick Church and Kent State Newman Center) and local members helped push the engine (a moment that showed community spirit).  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • UH Portage Medical Center provided a Mobile Mammogram Unit at Portage County Jail, screening 13 female inmates and finding possible disease in 2 as part of its new effort in preventive care. The initiative was funded by a local nonprofit and involved close cooperation with jail staff—who ensured safe, effective screenings and follow-up care.  Weekly Villager

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A 45-unit apartment complex at 1128 Lake St. sold for $3 million during the week of Sept. 16, 2025, making it the top selling property in Portage County and placing it about 1 mile from downtown Kent.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cardinal senior Sam Gdovichin raced at the OHSAA Division IV state cross country meet at Fortress Obetz last Saturday morning and finished 67th with a time of 16:56.43—marking his first state meet appearance in 21 years. He now aims to build on this success by qualifying for the track state meet in spring.  Weekly Villager
  • Garfield G-Men freshman Lina Kaufman finished 20th with a time of 18:53.74 at the Division III state cross country meet at Fortress Obetz—earning her first team All-Ohio honors and making her the first female to win a district title. She plans to carry her success into the track season and help her team secure a state berth in future meets.  Weekly Villager
