EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kent State University changed its winter weather policy to delay or cancel classes when the wind chill reaches -15 degrees—an update designed to protect students from frostbite. Student government president Ivory Kendrick led the change by presenting scientific research—showing that lower wind chills increase the risk of harm.  Record-Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Models show that a wobble in the polar vortex may send frigid air into Ohio around Thanksgiving, which could bring lake-effect snow to northern Ohio. Forecasters warn that colder air may drop temperatures below normal for the Great Lakes region—changing the weather pattern through November.  Record-Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Anna Hamid was named Hiram College’s first women’s ice hockey coach on October 8 (she previously served as an assistant coach) and is recruiting players for a team that will begin playing in the 2026 to 27 season.  Weekly Villager
  • Ohio’s deer archery season harvest lagged behind recent years as hunters checked 64,437 deer by Nov 9—Coshocton led with 2,521 deer even though Saturday, Nov 8 was the best day; the season began on Sept 27 and will run until Feb 1 while different bow types are allowed during the deer rut. This lower total compared to the recent three-year average raises questions on the current season’s success.  Record-Courier
