  • Portage County Sheriff's Office is collecting donations of non-perishable food and essential items like unused toys, baby items, blankets, toiletries and winter apparel until Dec. 23—items can be dropped off in secure bins in the office lobby at 8240 Infirmary Road in Shalersville, with food sent to local pantries and non-food items helping area residents in need.  Record-Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • On December 9, David Hassler, executive director of the Wick Poetry Center, will host a Tap Talk at North Water Brewing Company (101 Crain Ave., Kent) to discuss his new anthology 'The Nature of Our Times' from the Poets for Science initiative. Sponsored by the Kent Historical Society at 7 p.m., the event will feature poems, videos, photos, and artwork that highlight America’s natural wonders.  Kent State Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Dec 2, heavy snow fell across Kent and boosted holiday decor while local sledders enjoyed the wintry weather. City crews worked to clear roads—marking the season's biggest snowfall so far.  Record-Courier
  • The December full moon, also called the cold moon, will be a supermoon that peaks at 6:14 p.m. on December 4 and will be the final supermoon of the year. Forecasts for Akron and Cincinnati predict partly cloudy and partly sunny skies so residents will have a clear chance to view the event.  Record-Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio State Highway Patrol launched an end-of-year enforcement blitz today to remind drivers to buckle up, obey speed limits and drive sober — targeting issues like distraction, alcohol use and speeding. The effort comes after 11 people died in Thanksgiving weekend crashes — and as 2025 fatality trends closely mirror those of 2024.  Record-Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jilliane Pugh, a Kent native who grew up in Stow, opened Embrace Pink at 3274 Kent Road, Suite 103—offering specialized care products, personalized mastectomy fittings, and lifestyle coaching for women fighting breast cancer. The store held its ribbon-cutting ceremony in May and plans to launch its nonprofit arm, Pink with Purpose, in January.  Record-Courier
