COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Veteran's Grave Marker Project has identified and marked 53 unmarked veteran graves at Maple Grove Cemetery in Portage County—including World War II veterans Frank and Martha Graeser—and has found 110 more graves that do not qualify for federally provided markers. The organizer is urging state officials to change the law so that older veterans receive proper recognition.  News 5 Cleveland
  • On November 11, residents in Kent and Ravenna attended Veterans Day ceremonies honoring Portage County veterans despite cold and brisk winds—community groups and officials provided coffee, bagpipes, and rifle volleys as tributes were held at the courthouse lawn and near the Gateway Transit Center.  Record-Courier

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire damaged a historic home at 8539 State Route 14 near Streetsboro High School on Nov. 11 and killed two dogs—firefighters said the blaze likely started from a faulty clothes dryer and caused over $55,000 in damage, leaving the home uninhabitable.  Record-Courier
  • On Tuesday morning, a house fire near Streetsboro High School killed two dogs and caused over $50,000 in damage as firefighters from Aurora, Mantua, Kent, Twinsburg, and Reminderville responded—officials said the blaze likely started from an unattended clothes dryer.  News 5 Cleveland

  • Ohio Means Jobs of Portage County and Portage County Job and Family Services will host a job fair tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Reed Memorial Library at 167 E. Main St. in Ravenna, with several employers—Longmeadow, HEPA Environmental Services, and Express Employment Professionals—expected to participate.  Record-Courier

  • The Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association announced its all-state teams, naming Reese Gallagher of Hoban as Division III girls Player of the Year and Jordan West of Aurora as Division III boys Player of the Year. Aurora’s Louis Kastelic was also named Division III boys Coach of the Year—recognizing his work with the team.  Record-Courier
  • University of Akron football scored a two-point conversion late on November 11th as Marcel Williams threw a pass to QB Ben Finley to tie the game 35—35 at home against Kent State.  Record-Courier
